Arezzo and Cortona from Florence
Explore the ancient Tuscan cities of Arezzo and Cortona at your pace with an English speaking driver/guide at your side. A must do day excursion for anyone who wants to understand Tuscany history and how those intimate towns grew over the centuries.
After about an hour scenic drive from Florence through the Tuscan countryside you reach the medieval hill town of Arezzo famous since Etruscan times that has changed little since the Middle Ages and recently depicted in the Oscar-winning movie “La Vita č Bella”. The historic core is not big at all and it is just a pleasant 10 minute walk to the piazza Grande, the heart of it all. The charm of Arezzo is two-fold: It receives a fraction of the tourists of neighboring Florence and yet it has all the fascinating ambience of a well preserved small Renaissance city, with stunning and moving architecture and art. Piero della Francesca magnificent frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco is a must see for visitors but step away from that and you have the city and its spectacular sights pretty much to yourself and the locals. At the same time Arezzo is a beloved and well-used shopping town, especially if you like to browse quirky old antique stores, fine jewelry and clothes, and the commercial life of the town is so thriving while not being yet on many visitors list, it is fun to be in such a very old and beautiful town that is still bustling with shops, cafes and locals. After leaving the charming off the beaten path town of Arezzo your driver/guide escorts you to the appealing historic hilltop town of Cortona perched on a steep hill in Tuscany, with views over the green plains and hills of both Tuscany and Umbria.
Cortona one of the oldest hill towns and best-preserved Etruscan cities in Tuscany is a pleasant day-trip destination where strolling through charming medieval streets you can easily feel the atmosphere of this picturesque town as recently described by American novelist Frances Mayes in her book “Under the Tuscan Sun”. A world apart, this medieval town enclosed by its original walls has changed little in several centuries: a church built by St. Francis's good friend Brother Elias still stands with Francis's own tunic preserved under glass and you can wander through the very same piazzas walked by great men from long ago. The present day charm of Cortona which is intimate enough to see in a day has been praised by the writer Frances Mayes who lives within walking distance outside the walls, but your personal experienced driver/guide will tell our privileged guests how it got that way in a tour of the very streets and structures: the gates, the convents, the churches and their saints, the rows of medieval houses and crests of long gone, noble Italian families embedded in a civic wall. From the stone arching city gates to the palazzos when touring Cortona you walk back in history. Cortona beautiful architecture and cobblestone roads are very picturesque. It is a real pleasure to wander throughout this hill top town and be captured by fabulous views over the vibrantly green Tuscan hills along the medieval towering city walls. Since Cortona was never modernized, it exists exactly the way it always has and easily allows you to truly to take a walk back in time.
Cortona is also known for its excellent restaurants. Almost every place in which you set foot is good, though some are superb and your personal driver/guide will be very happy to provide suggestions and good tips about smaller places too!
