Murano which is the most famous of the Venetian Islands as the world known "Murano Glass" are produced here, is a miniature Venice. World known from the 10th century for its glassware, have been a sheltered community of glass artists for at least 700 years, leading the world in blown techniques and design of artistic glass production from tableware to chandeliers to jewelry. A few centuries ago all glass makers were required to live on the island to protect the secret of their craft. Today the tradition of glass making continues as many independent glass artists still thrive in on this magic island.
Burano one of the most picturesque of the Venetian lagoon a tiny, colorful fishing village has its streets and canals dotted with lovely brightly colored houses it is considered a Venice in miniature and it is world renowned for its century old lace-making industry using techniques inspired by the making of fishing nets. Its next-door neighbour, peaceful and green Torcello is the earliest center of civilization in the Venetian lagoon and where Ernest Hemingway used to live when in Venice and where he wrote his last book "Across the River and into the trees". Isolated in the middle of the lagoon where not many more than ten people live, was established between the 5th and 6th centuries is now a charmingly rural place and boasts the 7th century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption one of the oldest building in the lagoon which provides a wealth of insight into the art and architecture of the earliest period of Venetian habitation decorated with outstanding Byzantine mosaics.
