Florence Day Trips

Pisa and Lucca from Florence

A private guided chauffeured Florence day tour to visit the historic towns of Pisa home of the celebrated Galilei and Lucca a quiet and attractive Tuscan destination encircled by grassy town walls offers guests the opportunity to travel back to medieval Italy.
Once a powerful maritime republic the charming city of Pisa, listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO houses in the beautiful medieval Field of Miracles square the famous Leaning Tower, the impressive Baptistery and the massive Cathedral a magnificent architectural complex which commonly gets Pisa to be considered one of the most remarkable art cities in Europe.
The world-renowned Leaning Tower was begun in 1173 on a sandy silt soil and started to lean before the third level was finished in 1274. Galileo studied at the University of Pisa where he was a student of motion and gravity. Legend has it that he conducted experiments on gravity by dropping items from the Leaning Tower. Today, the tower leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. The Baptistery is the largest in Italy and is known for its incredible acoustics.
The beautiful walled city of Lucca, blissfully cut off by its perfectly intact Renaissance walls and one of the very best preserved medieval towns in Europe is rich with churches, beautiful squares and antique shops and last but not least birthplace of composer Puccini (La Boehme and Madame Butterfly). Lucca medieval walls are magnificent and circle the historic town completely. However, there is a hidden treasure below the beautiful walled city of Lucca as underneath the streets and houses lay thousands of years worth of historical remains. Evidence of this Roman heritage can be found all over the city. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is built around the original Roman amphitheater and all over town there are Roman ruins below the ground level. The amount of change and turmoil undertaken in the small city is very clear to see as there are an astonishing number of beautiful Romanesque/Gothic churches in a very small area, as powerful families attempted to out-weigh their counterparts. The Duomo in Lucca is the most beautiful with its façade of colonnades, but the Church of San Michele in Foro and the Basilica di Santi Frediano are also well-worth a visit.
Stroll from piazza to piazza and learn the city’s history through its architecture. In the city historic area where car traffic is non-existent, the narrow streets and medieval architecture give you the sense that little has changed through the ages. But it is the medieval city wall that sets Lucca apart. At the base of the city walls are manicured green fields Now the wall serves as a public park, complete with trees and perfect for easy walks and bike rides where children kick a football around, families meet up to eat and talk and teenagers lie on top of each other whispering sweet Italian nothings.
Around the top of the wall is a tree-lined bicycle path where families walk with their children and elderly men circle around the 5-kilometer perimeter. The views offered around the city wall are stunning as the mountains loom up on every side of the city, making you feel like Lucca is a little bubble in the Tuscan countryside, a town set apart from the rest of the world somehow. At dusk the setting sun colors the mountains in deep reds and purples, a sight that even manages to rival Michelangelo ‘David’ or the ‘Mona Lisa’.
You will have plenty of photo and shopping opportunities on this tour and your personal driver/guide will be happy to assist you should you wish to rent a bike to enjoy a refreshing ride around the edge of the wall, taking in the fresh air and the brilliant scenery.
