Get the answers to the questions you are burning to ask from your expert local guide. Described as the Pompeii of Rome, this 2000-year-old Roman harbor city is an archaeologist’s dream. If you do not have time to travel to Pompeii, or if you are interested in visiting places in Rome that are off the beaten track Ostia Antica Rome tour should be on your bucket list.
The Roman port town of Ostia Antica is 400 years older than Pompeii. According to legend, the fourth king of Rome founded the city. Ostia Antica served as both a military camp to prevent invaders from sailing up the Tiber River to reach Rome and was the major commercial port for the city. Unlike Rome, Ostia was inhabited until the Middle Age leaving a well-maintained and extraordinary example of urban Roman life. The remaining structures are plenty and well preserved, giving visitors a comprehensive example of what life was like at the height of the Empire in a commercial town.
In Ostia Antica, you will see the remarkable remains of a city from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD that was completely covered by sand due to its proximity to the ocean, and thus was remarkably preserved. Surviving remains date back as far as the 4th century BC and by the 3rd century BC, Ostia was a very important port town, naval base and commercial center for Rome, organizing and supplying vast amounts of food and merchandise to the capitol.
At this enormous site, you will see beautiful mosaic floors still in place at the many public baths and commercial trade centers, statues, temples, apartment buildings, cemeteries, a restaurant, and a beautifully preserved theater that is used even today for outdoor concerts.
Enjoy the scenic park, learn about the history of the area with your guide who will show you the highlights of this dense treasure trove of ancient life! Good walking shoes and comfortable clothes advised.

Our experience with Nancy Aiello Tours was the highlight of our trip to Rome. Our guide was really knowledgeable and able to adapt and please us (the parents), a 17 year old boy and a 7 year old girl. Which is asking a lot!! She made the day interesting and fun! I feel we learned things that we would have never found in a large guided tour or through audio or guide books. It was great that she was able to navigate around long lines and bring us to the places that were of interest to us. We didn’t have a lot of time before our trip to make plans for our stay in Rome, which was fine because you did everything for us. It felt like we were out with a friend showing us Ancient Rome, just happened that that friend was extremely knowledgeable!
Would definitely recommend Nancy Aiello Tours – really worth it if you are busy and don’t have the time to do a lot of research before traveling (which you need to do as there is so much that Rome has to offer). Fantastic for kids as it wasn’t just a lot of information thrown at us but it was information that all of us found really interesting. Our guide was able to lead us and answer questions about what we found interesting instead of just throwing facts our way. My son said it was the highlight of his trip to Rome and my daughter is telling everyone all the things that our Guide told her!!
Ann was brilliant to book with. She was extremely efficient and provided expert guidance and advice when booking. As a family we thought both tours were terrific. We loved the mask making workshop and the trip to Murano to visit a glass factory.
Elisabetta was brilliant with children. She came down to their level and involved them all the way. I loved the fact she started off showing them a map of Venice and gave them lots of fun quiz questions throughout. It made them active learners without them knowing it. She was fun, polite and a pleasure to have spent the afternoon with. I would thoroughly recommend her.
Samuele tour was good too. Both were very special. The girls had lots of fun and learnt lots. His expert knowledge in finding the right places to do these activities which would suit children was evident and very appreciated. Again, I would recommend him.
I found the tours on the Internet when looking specifically for tours with children in mind. We are already thinking of using you when we visit Tuscany next year!
The only thing I perhaps would have liked would have been a plan of what the tour guides were going to do so we could plan our other days a little better and not repeat anything. Luckily we had not really visited Murano yet but if we had, we would have then repeated the experience.
Apologies for the late feedback. We certainly look forward to using you again.
Please express our thanks to Ann, Elisabetta and Samuele for their parts in our experience. It has been a pleasure dealing with you. Thank you for all your advice and time.
